  1. Jacob spoke first. “I want to know if my hair is just like yours,” he told Mr. Obama, so quietly that the president asked him to speak again. Jacob did, and Mr. Obama replied, “Why don’t you touch it and see for yourself?” He lowered his head, level with Jacob, who hesitated. “Touch it, dude!” Mr. Obama said. “So, what do you think?” Mr. Obama asked. “Yes, it does feel the same,” Jacob said. 13. "‎This year we saw many hilarious performances by women, and many idiotic articles from men about how women suddenly became funny. Yes, imagine how great ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ would have been had Mary, Betty White, Cloris Leachman, and Valerie Harper actually been funny. If only Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Gilda Radner, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus had been able to get a laugh. I guess what I’m saying is, this isn’t the year that women finally became funny. This is the year that men finally pulled their heads out of their asses."

You’re disgusted about something, Niall?  Could it possibly be because “Rape Direction” was a trending topic today?  I’m shaking my head too, boo.
Let me take time out of my regularly-scheduled blogging to address this incident.  Perhaps it is because of the median age of this fan-base that trending topics like these happen, but I don’t think that’s an excuse.
Why would you create a trending topic that forces rape survivors to relive that event in your life?  Why would you want to minimize the horrific nature of these attacks, and make it easier for rapists to justify their actions?  Why would you want to contribute to a society that creates a joke out of something so incredibly painful?  Not to mention the fact that you’ve now associated this band that you allegedly love with one of the worst things that can happen to a person.
We already live in a culture that discourages survives of rape from reporting the assault.  We live in a culture where it is incredibly difficult to prosecute an assailant, and more often then not, they’re let off the hook.  We live in a culture where, if a woman is wearing a short skirt and makeup, then we say she “deserved it.”  When you tweet things like Rape Direction, you’re only contributing to these sexist, victim-blaming lines of thought, and you’re only making the problem worse.
I hope that the people who are fans of One Direction and who contributed to this Trending Topic today grow up to be critical-thinkers who consider the effects of their words and actions before they engage.  I hope that everyone learns that jokes are never funny when they hurt other people, as this trending topic has surely done.  Most importantly, I hope none of you are ever assaulted, victimized, or made to feel helpless or violated.
Until then, stop and think before you tweet, because you don’t live in a vacuum.
